About the Artist

Malu Moreira is a Brazilian contemporary abstract artist based between Brazil, Costa Rica and Bali, with a creative career spanning more than two decades. Her practice explores the relationship between water, nature, movement, femininity and the tropical environment — abstraction built from the textures and rhythms of the coast rather than literal landscape.

Before turning to fine art, Malu built a career in fashion design, running a hand-painted clothing line for many years. That background in textile, color and pattern carried directly into her painting practice, visible in the layered, tactile surfaces of her canvases.

Her visual language has been shaped by four places: Brazil, where she was raised; Costa Rica, whose exuberant Pacific nature — waves, rivers, reefs and rainforests, brings textures for some off her art; Bali, her second base, whose textile traditions and island pace echo her own path from cloth to canvas; and the Maldives, where transformative time in and around the reef deepened her attention to color, light through water, and the fragility of marine environments and the wider environmental questions they raise.

Malu's work has been shown across Brasil, USA, Costa Rica and Mexico, with pieces exhibited at the Museo de Arte Costarricense, Art Basel Miami Collective · ADG Art Design Gallery, Reserva Conchal, Hacienda Pinilla, and galleries in São Paulo and Cabo San Lucas. Her 2024 inclusion in "Llegadas y Salidas" at the Museo de Arte Costarricense was staged as part of the official programming of Costa Rica's Ministry of Culture) — a national institutional credit alongside her gallery and art-fair history. Her paintings are held in private collections internationally, and she regularly undertakes large-scale commissions integrated into high-end residential and hotels.
